Administrative / biographical background

Yorkshire Sculpture Park, at Bretton Hall near Wakefield, seeks to provide a centre of regional, national and international importance for the creation, exhibition and appreciation of modern and contemporary sculpture. Founded in 1977 by Peter Murray OBE, it has pioneered curatorial support for sculpture in the open air and access to the arts and landscape for all sectors of the community. Projects include exhibitions (in this country and abroad), residencies, the development of a collection, commissions, publications and wide-ranging educational activities from tours to artist-led workshops for schools and the public, with particular emphasis on hands-on experience.

The Archive charts the history and ongoing development of YSP as the country's first permanent sculpture park, a 'gallery without walls', as well as sculpture in the open air nationally and internationally. It is consulted by museum and gallery professionals, artists, teachers and commissioning agents, the general public and students studying subjects such as landscape design, tourism, architecture, marketing, heritage and administration as well as the visual arts.
