Administrative / biographical background

The Phoenix Lodge No. 173 was established in 1803, after purchasing Warrant No. 231, which was originally issued in 1785. In 1803 the lodge met at the Cadogan Arms, Sloane Square, Chelsea, Southwark, London. The lodge met at various inns and taverns around Holborn and Covent Garden until 1865 when it began to meet at Freemasons' Hall, Great Queen Street, London, where it has continues to meet until the present date. The lodge was named the Phoenix Lodge in 1828.
