Description

Survey volume DD1 is the first in the series of seven 'DD' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of Winchester, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Cluttons and Messrs. Smith and Watkins. The preferments in this volume concern the Winchester Chapter Estates, which were transferred by commutation to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on the following dates: 1 January 1860 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 16 April 1861 by Order in Council; and 29 September 1898 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 24 March 1899 by Order in Council.; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports. ; However, it is important to mention that a portion of the Winchester Capitular Estates originally commuted to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 1 January 1860 (effective date) were re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation on 25 March 1867 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 23 August 1867. ; The volume also has added annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporates later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Hampshire, parishes of Compton, Binsted, Kingsley, Kings Somburn, Mottisfont, Sparsholt, Weeke, Hursley, Chilcomb, Winnall, Morestead, Winchester St. Bartholomew Hyde, Winchester St. Faith, Winchester St. Peter Cheesehill, Winchester St. John, Winchester St. Thomas, Winchester St. Lawrence, Winchester St. Mary Kalender, Winchester St. Maurice, Winchester St. Swithin and Winchester St. Michael; the county of Wiltshire, parish of Aldbourn [Aldbourne]; the county of Flintshire, parish of Hope; the county of Denbighshire, parish of Holt; and the counties of Denbighshire and Flintshire, parish of Gresford.
