CHICHESTER: St. Pancras Infants School

<span class="wrapper"><p>Documents in other West Sussex Record Office collections</p> <p>Par 42/25/1 26 July 1843</p> <p>Conveyance of the school site for no consideration by Charles [5th] Duke of Richmond and his eldest son and heir apparent, Charles Henry Earl of March and Darnley</p> <p>All that piece ... of ground ... being on the south side of the Queen's Highway in the said parish of St. Pancras leading from the City of Chichester to the parish of Westhampnett ... and measuring from east to west on the north side thereof one hundred and seven feet of assize and in width at the east and thereof thirty one feet of assize or thereabouts and at the west end fifty nine feet of assize or thereabouts and bounded on the east by premises belonging to Mr. Johnson on the west by premises belonging to William Warren, on the north by the Queen's Highway and on the south by the Lavant Watercourse, together with the two messuages or tenements and other buildings standing and being thereon as the same were late in the occupation of Mary Terry and - Smart and are now untenanted. To the use of the Minister Churchwardens and Overseers of St.Pancras trust to permit the said premises and all buildings to be erected thereon to be for ever hereafter appropriated and used as and for a School for the Education of poor children in the parish ... which said School shall always be conducted upon the principles of the Incorporated National Society for the Promotion the Education of the Poor in the principles of the Established Church, and to be under the general management and control of the committee for the time being of the subscribers</p> <p>With plan of site</p> <p>[Now in the custody of Messrs. E/35F/12/1 was deposited by the Director of Education, in April 1953.

Founded by public subscription in 1843, the Infants School was to fill a need not supplied by the Central and Lancastrian School which catered for older pupils - although an Infants School had been established at Northgate in 1836

The St. Pancras School was established in the building still standing at 101 St. Pancras, and was closed in 1933 when the pupils were transferred to the St. James' Infant School.
