Roll of Honour (de Ruvigny) Vol II, Sect 1, p 174: 2Lt 7KRRC att MGC, only son of David Leoppold Lewis, 10 Porchester Terr, London by his wife Ray, d.of Alfred Moses of Hobart, Tasmania. Born Liverpool 6/2/1892, educ Repton & Brasenose, Oxford where he grad. BA with Hons in History in 1914. Joined HAC 4/8/14, obt Commsn in KRRC 9/11/14. Served BEF F&F from Aug 1915 being att to 165 MG Coy in June 16 and was KIA nr Guillemont 9 August. Buried where he fell. A brother officer wrote "after the outbreak of war he invariably said he didn't mind what happened as long as he had done his work well. So many people say the same thing:so many say it without meaning it, but I always felt that he was absolutely sincere and when he died, he gave his country the best and most unselfish life". And another " Lewis was happy as could be up to the day, and, I believe, right up to the time of his death. The nearer we got to the enemy the more jolly he seemed to feel. He was a real sound man and of sterling worth". Unmarried.
