Administrative / biographical background

The benefice of Elsted has been held with Treyford and Didling since the nineteenth century and in 1849 a church was built at Treyford to serve the united benefice. This was demolished in 1951.

In 1893 Elsted church was severely damaged in a gale and use was restricted to the chancel. It was restored and re-dedicated in 1951.

From 1946 to 1949 Elsted with Treyford formed a civil parish with a Parish Council. This not being successful, the two parishes reverted to separate Parish Meetings until 1970 when they became a Common Parish Council.
