Overseas Settlement (OS)

The task of looking after the welfare of migrants can be traced back to 1923 when the Church Assembly responded to a request from the Governments of the Commonwealth Dominions, supported by the British Government. In 1925 the Church of England Advisory Council of Empire Settlement was formed, in 1974 this became The Church of England Committee [Council?] for Overseas Settlement and later still Overseas Settlement. The work was lodged as part of BSR, operating as part of the International Affairs Committee - originally as the Committee for Overseas Settlement, and c1982 as simply Overseas Settlement. Initially involved with the sponsoring of individuals or families requiring nominations for emigration, the work later evolved with a commendation service being provided to all Anglicans travelling to other parts of the world wishing for Church contact and links.
