Description (What the record is about)
-
The agents kept their papers in subject bundles, and this arrangement has been retained. The bundles contain correspondence, plans, deeds and other types of documents, which are not mentioned elsewhere in the catalogue.
The two agents involved with the estate in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, (the period covered by these bundles) were Alfred Ford, (AF) c.1875-1913 and, from 1913, Frederick Crossley (FC).
Unless otherwise stated all letters from Sir James, Sir Ughtred (later 1st Baron Shuttleworth), 2nd Baron Shuttleworth, AF and FC were written from Gawthorpe. Messrs. Farrer, Outry and Co., of 66 Lincolns Inn Fields, London were the estate solicitors and are referred to below as Messrs. Farrer and Co.
