Michaelmas 1777: Information of the Rev. William Vernon, Hanbury, & John Dowdeswell Esq., Bromsgrove: a vagrant pretending to be deaf & dumb came to Vernon's house in Hanbury, where Dowdeswell happened to be, said he was Thomas Monroe, son of Henry Monroe, & offered medicines - he produced a book of pretended cures for various disorders - he behaved ina very insolent manner & they took him before Richard Norris, JP. Monroe now found his speech & said he was William Moore with a wife & children in Bromsgrove - he later admitted that he was sometimes with gipsies & gamblers & that he had dealt in crockery ware travelling with a gang of asses - he had been in Amsterdam Rotterdam & America & would be glad to come off with a whipping. They believe he is a notorious cheat & impostor.
