This collection was purchased by the Cheshire County Council in October 1956
It consists of a further 42 documents similar to the Crewe (Cowper) Collection purchased by the County Council in August 1950 - the majority being Additional papers accumulated during Thomas Cowper's term of office as Mayor of Chester (1641 - 2)
The items are each mounted on cartridge paper and were formerly bound in 2 Volumes, split up for convenience at the time of sale. The mounts were originally 18" x 12¾", which have now been cutdown to 16¾" x 10¾", for convenience of storage. The original numbering is given in the Calendar, with page references to the Appendix to the 5th Report of the Historical Manuscripts Commission
