Administrative / biographical background

This diary for the year 1619 is contained in a printed volume entitled A New Almanacke and Prognostication, for this yeare of our Lord God, 1618, compiled by Richard Allestree of Derby.

The author appears to have been Thomas Whitby (d.1624), who was the son of Robert Whitby (d.1631). In 1606, the City Assembly made Thomas Whitby a freeman, without payment, and in 1608, he and his father were appointed joint Clerks of the Pentice for life. In 1610, he was chosen as a common councilman and was sheriff in 1612-13. He was elected alderman in 1616. His diary records an attempt to unseat his brother, Edward Whitby (d.1639) from the recordership of Chester.
