Probate before the Worshipful George Harris LL.D., Surrogate of the Rt.Worshipful George Hay, LL.D., Master, Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, signed Wm.Leyard, Hen.Stevens, John Stevens deputy Registers, of will, of which copy is attached;-
6 April 1765. In Calcutta.
Will of Henry Spelman, Captain of Cavalry in the service of the Honble the East India Company at Bengal in the East Indies; beneficiaries:- the Most Noble the Marchioness of Annandale of Turnham Green, co.Middlesex, Elizabeth Domville wife of John Domville of St.Martins in the Fields, Stephen Hoare of the Broadway, Westminster, and Peter Downes Esq., of Calcutta in Bengall, to have equal shares of his estate and effects after payment of legacies, viz;- to Charles and George Johnston the sons, and Charlotte the daughter, of the sd.Marchioness, £50 each for mourning, to his "good friend" Sir Horatio Pittus, Bt., co.Norfolk, £200 and his gold snuff-box, to Mrs Mary and Mrs Elizabeth Taylors, and Mr William Cooper of the city of Norwich £5 each for mourning, Hannah and Samuel son and daughter of James Hoare of Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire £5 each, Captain John Nollikens and Ensign Robert Shand of Calcutta 200 Arcot Rupees, Benjamin Randall of Calcutta £50, to his servant Sarah Allen her clothes & £50, to his slave boy John Mougheer his freedom immediately, upon my decease.
Executors: in England the marchioness of Annandale, Eliz. Domville, Stephen Hoare, and Peter Downes Esq., in Calcutta Benjamin Randall (who is to remit by Bills on the East India Company all that may come to his hands on Spelman's account, to the Executors in England.).
