Description (What the record is about)
-
The abbey was founded c.1184 as a hospital run by Premonstratensian canons from Croxton in Leicestershire. This collection of part of the abbey muniments can be compared with the transcripts of the 'Cockersand Chartulary' printed in the Chetham Society's new series, vols. 38-40, 43, 56, 57 and 64. However, the original deeds contain more information than the cartulary, e.g. witnesses. The endorsements show several incomplete numbering systems including one in Arabic numerals (the readings of which are sometimes in doubt) but the present arrangement does not follow any of these older systems. All of the deeds refer to land in Westmorland apart from RCHY 3/3/1-7, 26 (Lancashire)
