Administrative / biographical background

The Society commenced in cottages in Water Lane in 1853, and in 1855 Sunday school/church building was constructed at the corner of Ainsworth Road and Smyrna Street. This was replaced by a new sunday school on Smyrna Street in 1884, and a chapel on Ainsworth Road in 1910. In 1962, the society amalgamated with others to form the new Wesley Methodist church, and the chapel building was sold. The church at Black Moss (Bolton Street) was formed as a Mission from Smyrna Street in 1891.
