Administrative / biographical background

St Augustine's, Belvedere has its origins in a so-called iron church, which was established on the site of the present Vicarage about 1884. For many years it remained a daughter church of All Saints, Belvedere. The population of the area was growing rapidly and in 1914 plans were drawn up for a new church on the present site. The foundation stone was laid the following year. Finally in 1916 the Bishop of Rochester consecrated St Augustine's Church and the surrounding district was erected into a Parish in its own right.
