Updating of Master Plan, Area Plans and residential development plans and expansion plans, 1966 - 1970s

During this period there were several Master Plan Updates, including the updating of the 1966 Master Plan and updates in 1972 and 1978. � �By 1969 Leonard Vincent, Chief Architect had proposed the need for 5000-6000 dwellings between Jun 1969 and Mar 1976, compared to the 4000 target in the 1966 Master Plan. The Corporation calculated that in order to meet this target the would need an additional 200 acres of land from outside of the Designated Area. � �The Corporation had several periods where they tried to enlarge the Designated Area for Stevenage between 1962 - and 1974, which were all, ultimately rejected. � �In 1962 - 1964, there were proposals for expanding, including 1450 acres to the west of the town beyond the now A1 road, and 100 acres to the north east. Due to issues with, and opposition to, the proposal, it was not accepted by the Minister for Housing and Local Government. � �In 1973, expansion plans involved the drawing up of 5 feasibility studies, but the proposals were abandoned
