Affairs in Muscat

Despatch from the Foreign Department, Government of India, to theSecretary of State for India, No. 128 of 1870, dated 15 July 1870, containingenclosures dated 15 May-3 July 1870. The enclosures consist of copies ofcorrespondence relating to events in Muscat and Oman, particularly in referenceto the rule of Syud Azan bin Ghias [Sayyid 'Azzān binQays Āl Bū Sa'īd] as Sultan of Muscat, including:. Syed Azan's consolidation of his rule over the whole of Oman, including a siege of the Fort of Azum [Al Hazm]; A potential threat to Syud Azan's rule from Syud Toorkee [Sayyid Turkī bin Sa'īd Āl Bū Sa'īd], and British observations of Toorkee's movements; Potential support for either Azan or Toorkee from the Sheikhs of Aboothabee [Abu Dhabi], Amalgavine [Umm al-Qaywayn], Debai [Dubai] and Shargah [Sharjah]; The primary correspondents are: the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf; the Political Agent, Muscat; the Native Agent, Shargah; the Government of Bombay; and the Government of India.

Each enclosure is given a number, which is recorded for referenceon the verso of the last folio, along with the original reference and adescription of the contents. The despatch itself is numbered 1, the abstract ofcontents listing the enclosures is numbered 2, and the enclosures 3, 4, etc.
