The manor of Stoke Damerel, including much of the borough of Devonport, formerly belonged to the St Aubyn family, who retained the ownership of almost all the land in the borough in the nineteenth century. Most of the property was held on leases for 99 years or three lives, and from the mid-nineteenth century the St Aubyn family imposed many restrictions on building erected in the town. The following detailed architectural drawings and elevations were deposited with the St Aubyn records as part of this early attempt at town planning
