Administrative / biographical background (Historical or biographical information about the creator of the record and the context of its creation)

The acquisition of the Hooton Pagnell estate by the Warde family of Pontefract is explained in the introduction to Doncaster Archives catalogue reference HP. The history of the family from the late nineteenth century is as follows. In 1878, Sarah Julia [died 1931], the surviving daughter of Rev. William Warde of Hooton Pagnell, married William Wright Aldam [1853-1925], the heir of the adjoining Frickley estate. The groom adopted the surname of Warde-Aldam.
One of their sons, William St. Andrew [1882-1958] inherited the Hooton Pagnell estate from his parents and another, John Ralph Patentius [born 1892] inherited the Frickley estate. The Hooton Pagnell estate descended to Mary Betty [daughter and heir of Col. W St A Warde-Aldam] and her husband, Major HG Norbury, who took the surname of Warde-Norbury in 1958. The estate is now [1997] in the possession of their son, Mr WGA Warde-Norbury.
