In 1847 it was proposed to build a new church for the parish of Chichester St. Peter the Great [alias Subdeanery]; the services for that congregation had been held in the north transept of the Cathedral. The restoration of the Cathedral, also proposed then, was hindered by the fall of the spire in 1861.
