Description (What the record is about)
-
Signed minutes taken from meetings of a Committee which met under a number of different guises during its existence. The meetings were originally held in various London locations, before finding a regular home at the Society's property at Dartmouth Street, Westminster and then, finally, at St. Edward's House, Great College Street, Westminster. The Committee members were drawn from within the Society itself and from noted individuals in London society at large, including Lord Halifax and Lord Shaftesbury. Copies of Annual Reports recording the years events and offering a brief financial overview are often affixed next to the minutes. Initially the Committee oversaw the purchase of properties at Dartmouth Street, Westminster, and then a purpose built house for the Society at Great College Street, Westminster (later named St. Edward's House). In later years the Committee met to discuss more general matters connected with the running of St. Edward's House, and the work and well-being of its inhabitants.

Established in 1896 the Committee went through numerous name changes reflecting its changing responsibilities and shifting membership through the years. Initially formed as the Cowley Branch House Provisional Committee with the aim of forming a further Committee to oversee the purchase of properties in Dartmouth Street, Westminster for SSJE to use as a London base, the name was promptly changed to General Committee following the setting up of said Committee. By 1920 the Committee had become known as the General Committee of the London House and by 1932 had changed to St. Edward's House Auxiliary Committee. In 1936 it changed to St. Edward's House Advisory Committee befor becoming Lord Shaftesbury's Committee c 1948, and finally, following the death of Lord Shaftesbury in 1961, Lord Shaftesbury Committee.
