Description (What the record is about)
-
The correspondence falls into two distinct groups. DDX 232/1-9 concern the career of John Henry Latham (1823-1843) at Rugby School under Dr. Thomas Arnold. Most letters are to or from his family at Springfield, Sandbach, and a few to his grandparents at Bradwall Hall, seat of Dr. John Latham (1761-1843), President of the Royal College of Physicians. They deal with curricula and the progress of John Henry Latham himself and his Cheshire contemporaries, his Ormerod cousins, Wilbraham, Cholmondeley etc.
Family matters and sporting activities are frequently mentioned together with the odd notable event such as a visit by Wombwell's Menagerie.
DDX 232/10-13 contain correspondence from the children of the Rev. Henry Latham (b.1794), Vicar of Fittleworth, Sussex, to their cousins, the children of John Latham (1787-1853) of Bradwall Hall. The minutiae of European travel and sightseeing are the main substance of the letters. Less expected references are noted in the following calendar.
