Administrative / biographical background

Prebendary Cran was a close friend of Richard Pye, and had encouraged him to write down the recollections of his life, with a view to eventually publishing them as memoirs. When Richard Pye died he bequeathed these papers to Prebendary Cran. Alderman Pye was born on the 3 May 1870, close to Christ Church, Preston. He trained as a typographer and eventually went on to lecture on this subject at the Harris Institute. In later years he became a JP, was made an Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Preston, and served on the Town Council until 1952.
