The Cotton Districts Convalescent Fund was founded in 1875 to make use of the undistributed balance of the money collected to relieve the distress caused by the Cotton Famine of 1861. Its object was to provide for convalescent care of needy persons from designated areas. A convalescent home was built at Southport and later money was contributed to the enlargement and reconstruction of the Devonshire Hospital, Buxton and a Children's Sanatorium in Southport.
The Barnes Samaritan Charity was founded in 1872 under the provision of the will of Robert Barnes, esq (June 1870). The object was "the relief of persons afflicted with severe or incurable bodily disease, at their own homes ...". Again, recipients had to live within a certain area, in the first instance the City of Manchester or Borough of Salford.
Under a scheme dated 8 April 1975, the Charity Commissioners approved a scheme for the two charities to be administered jointly, although the different conditions governing who might benefit from each charity were retained.
