An act of 1828 empowered Quarter Sessions to establish Petty Sessions to deal with less serious crimes, and to conduct preliminary hearings of cases which would be heard before the Quarter Sessions or Assizes.
On 1 April 1974, the Petty Sessions Divisions of South Lonsdale, Hornby, Morecambe and Lancaster combined to form the Lancaster Petty Session Division [see PSL].
