Title
LEASES
Description

The leases are arranged by manors in order of acquisition and followed by a general section of leases involving more than one manor. All these leases are ones granted by the Arundells or sub-leases by their tenants during Arundell ownership of the manor.

Leases from the time before the Arundells' acquisition of a manor form part of their title and are in AR/1. Surrenders, assignments and abstracts of leases, draft leases and bonds related to leases are included here.

Arrangement

Within each Cornish manor the leases are arranged by tenements in alphabetical order and within each tenement in chronological order so that the history of each tenement can be traced through. Leases involving more than one tenement or the whole manor come at the end, generally in chronological order.

In St Columb manor all tenements in St Columb town are arranged in chronological order because of the difficulty of distinguishing between them. Some of these tenements are named, often after a previous tenant, but these names were not stable. In Connerton town, in the manor of Connerton, different tenements can be distinguished more easily and have been grouped accordingly under the general tenement heading of 'Connerton'.

The leases of Carminow manor include some for Philleigh and Whitstone glebe land which was part of the Carminow inheritance and administered through Carminow manor.

There are only eight leases for Bodardle manor, all from the sixteenth century, and these are arranged chronologically not by tenement. See CL 109 - 115 [Clifden of Lanhydrock] for later Bodardle leases.

Leases for counties other than Cornwall are arranged chronologically under each manor apart from Loddiswell where the number of leases made it feasible to arrange by tenement in alphabetical order and chronologically within each tenement.
