Description

During World War 1, the Devonshire Hospital treated many injured British, Canadian and ANZAC soldiers. This album appears to have been created as a memento of these patients. The soldiers usually sign with details of their regiment, war service, and date when they were repatriated

Administrative / biographical background

A hospital was founded in Buxton in 1858, making use of a large domed building that formerly served as stables to the Dukes of Devonshire; this was then named the Devonshire Royal Hospital in 1934. During World War 1, 1914-1918, the hospital treated many injured British, Canadian and ANZAC soldiers.
