Administrative / biographical background

The donor was born in 1897 in Bradford. Her parents were Francis and Hanora Monaghan. Francis came from the Sheffield area where his father had a small building business. He also worked in the building trade, but died young following a mastoid operation at the age of 28, soon after the birth of the donor's younger brother James. His wife Hanora, was 24 when her husband died. She returned to Bradford to resume work in a woollen mill, a job she had done since she was 12. Her father Timothy Lehane was born in Cork in 1834, the son of Jeremiah and Hanora Lehane. Timothy emigrated to England in 1861, to Bradford where he found employment as a wool comber with Sam Lister and Co.. He changed his surname to Lyons. In March 1864 he went to visit his sister in America and whilst there he joined the U.S. navy and took part in the Civil War. After his discharge at the end of the war, he returned to Bradford where he married Mary Kearns in 1868. He was a talented painter. He opened a studio, specialising in portrait painting and church works. The couple had 3 children, Hanora born 1870. Jeremiah born 1871 and John born 1873. The donor married John Grady in 1920. John was born in the U.S.A. of English parents but they returned to England and settled in Oldham. He joined the Cheshire regiment as a regular soldier and was wounded in World War I which left him in poor health until his death in 1969. He and Maria had six children.
