Timothy emigrated to England in 1861, to Bradford where he found employment as a wool comber with Sam Lister and Co.. He changed his surname to Lyons. In March 1864 he went to visit his sister in America and whilst there he joined the U.S. navy and took part in the Civil War. After his discharge at the end of the war, he returned to Bradford where he married Mary Kearns in 1868. He was a talented painter.
