Administrative / biographical background

The Rutland Quarter Sessions records are known to have been kept at Oakham Castle at various dates until the 20th century - although they were reported as being in a leased building in Newgate Street, Oakham in 1800 and previously in the private residences of the Clerks of the Peace; this perhaps explains why surviving records date only from the mid-18th century. The County Council built a strongroom at the rear of Oakham police station in 1903, but many of the records transferred here were unfortunately sent for paper salvage in World War Two.

For further details, see G. Phillips "The Annals of Rutland" in The Rutland Magazine and County Historical Record, Volume IV (1909-10), p.43 et seq. This series of articles lists a considerable number of documents which are no longer extant, including the Quarter Sessions rolls from 1756.

The surviving records were deposited by the last Clerk of the Peace, Rutland County Council and solicitors whose predecessors had acted as Clerks of the Peace. The collection includes a good series of minute books, 1743-1971, records of enrolments, 1762-1873 and County Treasurers' accounts, 1816-1890. The remainder date largely from the 20th century and include series of notebooks, 1939-1969 and case papers and depositions, 1940-1971.
