Description

Annual returns giving names, ages, professions and residence of members of the Rodney Lodge [Moderns] and the date when initiated or joined the Lodge. Some of the annual returns are signed by John Watson, Provincial Grand Treasurer. Item GBR 1991 AR/987/4 includes membership details covering the period 1785 to 1786 for Rodney Lodge, Hull and in addition Minerva Lodge, No. 451 [SN 1012], Hull; St George's East York Militia Lodge, No. 442 [SN 999], Beverley; Newtonian Lodge, No. 499 [SN 1035], meeting at the Elephant and Castle Inn, Knaresbrough and Union Lodge, No. 410 [SN 941], York.

Administrative / biographical background

Rodney Lodge was granted a warrant by the Moderns Grand Lodge to meet as No. 436 in 1781. It met at the Bull and Sun Inn, Mytongate, Kingston-?upon-?Hull, Yorkshire and in 1800 the lodge moved to the Freemasons' Hall, Mytongate, Kingston-?upon-?Hull. It was renumbered as No. 351 in 1792. At the union between the Antients' and Moderns' Grand Lodges in 1813 the Lodge was given the number No. 451 and was renumbered as No. 301 in 1832. The Lodge held its last meeting on 8 December 1820 and was erased on 5 September 1838.
