Miscellaneous Cashiers' and Agents' Records

Under this head have been gathered various agents' records which do not appear to belong to one or other of the main groups of records kept in the Mint Office-that is, the Mint, Household, Great Tew, and Private Books-or whose place in that system is uncertain.

Account Books, &c.

The title of the volume tentatively described as a Cash Agency Letter Book is not legible.
The Cash Book of the M. R. Boulton and James Watt Cash Agency with, &c. is mentioned in a letter in the London Agency Letter Book, p. 29.
The Cashier's Pass Book (1834-1844) is record of receipts by Joseph Westley, the cashier;
The earlier Cashier's Memorandum Book contains, at the front, miscellaneous memoranda concerning accounts, including a "List of Books used by and in possession of J. Westley," a "List of Books used by and in possession of W. H. Remmett-Rolling Mill," and a similar list headed "used by & in possession of E. Chambers." At the back is a series of statements headed "Copy of Bank Agency Balances delivd. from time to time to M. R. B. Esqr.," covering the period from 15 Oct. 1834 to 23 May 1838. The later volume continues these statements as far as July 1847, but contains no other memoranda. This second volume is untitled, but has been given the same title as the first, for the sake of uniformity.
The Cash Diary B, kept by Westley, is a record of receipts and payments on various accounts. Cash Diary A (to which book B refers) has not been found.
Certain records listed appear to be closely related to these-in particular, the Mint and Coinage Cash and Bankers Books, 1820-1832 (listed with the records of Soho Mint), the Private and Great Tew Cash and Bankers Book, 1820-1827 (listed with the Private Books and Documents), and the House and Land Agency Records (listed with the Household Books and Documents).

Other Records

These are a miscellany of documents found scattered through the collection, including files of memoranda relating to the steel trade at Soho and M. Boulton & Plate Co.
The Agent's Notebook 1847-1849 is the notebook of Edward Price. It records a great deal of information about the mint business, but also lists of rents, lists of articles sent to Great Tew, financial notes, notes of M. P. W. Boulton's addresses in London, and so on. As well as being land agent Price acted for M. P. W. Boulton in mint business.
The Printed Records relating to Birmingham Organisations… were found in the artificial "Birmingham" boxes assembled by the Assay Office. They consist of annual reports of bodies such as the Bluecoats School and the Birmingham Dispensary to which the Boultons were subscribers, and printed cards advertising the Birmingham Fire Insurance office. They were presumably kept for reference by the agents.
Some of these papers may have been removed by the Assay Office from the Papers of C. J. Chubb (MS 3782/11).
