Administrative / biographical background

Deriving from a technical sub-committee of the National Union of Women Workers in 1896, the ATDS was formed as a separate Association with a close relation to its originating body in 1897. In 1909 its name was changed to Association of Teachers of Domestic Subjects; it reverted to its original title in 1962.

H. Sillitoe, A history of the teaching of domestic subjects (London, 1933, Portway, repr., 1966) includes a chapter on the early history of the ATDS.
