The area of which the drainage was directed to the South West Sussex Rivers was added to Part I of the First Schedule to the Land Drainage Act, 1930, on 20 January 1938 by the South West Sussex Rivers Catchment Area Order, 1938 [Statutory Rules and Orders, 1938, No. 57, made by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries under s. 2(2) of the Land Drainage Act, 1930 (20 and 21 George V, c. 44).] and was therefore designated a Catchment Area for the purposes of the Act. A Board was constituted for the Catchment Area on 14 April 1938 by the South West Sussex Rivers Catchment Board Constitution Order, 1938 [S. R. & O., 1938, No. 463, made by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries under s. 3 of the Land Drainage Act, 1930 (20 and 21 George V, c. 44)]
The rights and obligations of the Commissioners of Sewers for Western Sussex over the 'main river' were transferred to the Catchment Board on 8 November 1938 by the South West Sussex Rivers Catchment Board Transfer Order, 1938 [S. R. & O., 1938, No. 1394, made by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries under s. 4(1)(a) of the Land Drainage Act, 1980 (20 and 21 George V, c. 44).]. The powers and duties of the South West Sussex Internal Drainage Board were transferred to the Catchment Board on 1 May 1949 by the South West Sussex Rivers Catchment Board (Transfer of Powers of the South West Sussex Internal Drainage Board) Order, 1949 [Statutory Instruments, 1949, No. 806, made by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries under s. 11 of the Land Drainage Act, 1930 (20 and 21 George V, c. 44).]; consequently the records of the Catchment Board after this date include the records of the Catchment Board acting as the South West Sussex Internal Drainage Board
The Catchment Board was dissolved on 1 October 1950, its functions passing to the West Sussex River Board by the West Sussex River Board Constitution Order, 1950 [S. I., 1950, No. 974, made by the Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries, and Health, under s. 1 of the River Boards Act, 1948 (11 and 12 George VI, c. 32).]
