Enclosures to secret letters from the Secret Department, Bombay Castle, addressed to the East India Company Secret Committee. Copies are signed by John Pollard Willoughby, Chief Secretary to the Government of Bombay. Papers relate to political and military affairs in the Punjaub [Punjab], Scinde [Sindh], Qajar Persia [Iran], Khiva, Turkish Arabia [Ottoman Iraq], Muscat, Zanzibar, Aden, and the Suez Canal in Egypt. Subjects include declarations of the British victory over the Sikh Kingdom [the Sikh Khāliṣah] and the occupation of the capital, Lahore; descriptions of the Jewish community of Bagdad [Baghdad]; the mistreatment of women; the suppression of the trade of enslaved people from Africa; reactions of the East India Company to the murder of an Arab villager; pilgrimage to Kerbella [Karbala] and Mecca; the persecution of Shia [Shīʿah] Muslims in Ottoman dominions; the sale of looted property and jewellry from Scinde; British and Russian relations at the Court of Persia; the relationship between learning English and rationality; and public disorder and plunder on the southern coast of Persia. This volume additionally includes several printed works and a hand drawn plan. Several enclosures have been removed at a later date (indicated within the relevant descriptions).
