The donor's maternal grandparents were Thomas and Edith Richardson. Thomas born in 1888 moved from Lancaster to Manchester to work as a free-lace journalist with a specialist knowledge of the cotton industry. He was an active socialist, a member of the Fabian Society and during World War I, a conscientious objector. His wife was the daughter of James Robert Sherlock, a printer's compositor from Bangor, N. Ireland, who had settled in Higher Broughton. Edith, born in 1889, was the youngest of 6 surviving children. The couple married in 1910. They had 5 children, a son, Norman and 4 daughters, Lilian, Gladys, Kathleen (the donor's mother) and Beryl. The young family was lively and unorthodox, often supporting father at his political meetings. The donor, born in 1941, was brought up by her Aunt Gladys. Her mother's marriage was an unhappy one and she was killed in a road accident when she was 35. The donor is a primary teacher and has taught abroad.
