Edward Capern became a post messenger in Bideford in 1848, retiring due to ill health 15 years later in 1866. He wrote verse for the North Devon Journal's 'Poet's Corner' and his poems were first published in a volume in 1856. He lived in Harborne, near Birmingham for 18 years before returning to North Devon to live in Braunton for the remainder of his life.
