Naipaul with 'A Bend in the River', published by Deutsch,Julian Rathbone with 'Joseph', published by Michael Joseph, andFay Weldon with 'Praxis', published by Hodder & Stoughton.The Judges were Lord (Asa) Briggs (Chair), Benny Green, Michael Ratcliffe, Hilary Spurling, and Paul Theroux.
