West Essex Health Authority

West Essex Health Authority was established in 1982, superseding Harlow Health District which had been set up in 1974 under the National Heath Service Reorganisation Act, 1973. For hospitals within this health authority see the current edition of The Hospital and Health Services Year Book

Waltham Joint Hospital Board and Waltham Isolation Hospital (A/HW1)

Waltham Joint Hospital Board was formed 7 May 1902 by Provisional Order of the Local Government Board (confirmed by the Waltham Joint Hospital Order, 1902), under the Public Health Act, 1875, and comprised the urban districts of Waltham Holy Cross, Buckhurst Hill, and Chingford. Waltham Isolation Hospital was built by the Board in 1905.

By the Waltham Joint Hospital Order, 1907, the Board was enlarged to include Woodford U.D. In 1933 Buckhurst Hill U.D. was amalgamated with Loughton U.D. and the parish of Chigwell, under the name of Chigwell U.D., and the enlarged district was added to the Board. Finally Wanstead U.D. joined in 1934 following its amalgamation with Woodford U.D. The Board ceased to exist when the National Health Service Act, 1946, came into force in 1948

Honey Lane Hospital, Waltham Abbey (A/HW 2)

This was called Waltham Isolation Hospital until 1948 (see A/HW 1). From 1948 to 1963 it was part of Epping Group Hospital Management Committee, and from 1963 to 1974 part of Harlow Group H.M.C.

Waltham Abbey War Memorial Hospital (A/HW 3)

This was a voluntary hospital opened in 1921. In 1948 it was taken over by the National Health Service, being part of Epping Group H.M.C. until 1963, and from 1963 to 1974 part of Harlow Group H.M.C. The Hospital was closed in 1980

Ongar War Memorial Hospital (A/HW 4)

Situated in the parish of Shelley, this voluntary hospital was opened in 1933, although the decision to build a hospital had originally been taken in 1918. It became a National Health Service hospital in 1948, and was part of Epping Group H.M.C. (1948-63), and later Harlow Group H.M.C. (1963-74)

Epping Cottage Hospital (A/HW 5)

This was a voluntary hospital opened at Bell Common in 1912 to Commemorate the Coronation of King George V. It became a national Heath Service hospital in 1948, being part of Epping Group H.M.C. The hospital was closed in 1950 and the building was used as a 'nurses' home

St Margaret's Hospital, Epping (A/HW 6)

This was formerly Epping Union workhouse, where a new infirmary was built in 1913 (for minutes of Epping Union House Committee, 1912-27, see G/EM 19021). Under the Local Government Act, 1929, control was transferred from the Guardians to the Public Assistance Committee of Essex County Council. In 1938 the name was changed from Epping Institution to St. Margaret's Hospital. It was taken over by the National Health Service in 1948, and was part of Epping Group H.M.C. (1948-63) and then Harlow Group H.M.C. (1963-74)

Wanstead U.D. Fever Hospital (A/HW 7)

This isolation hospital was built by Wanstead Local Board of Health in Empress Avenue, Aldersbrook in 1893, and was administered by Wanstead U.D.C. from 1894. When Wanstead and Woodford urban districts were amalgamated in 1934, and Wanstead joined Waltham Joint Hospital Board control of the hospital passed to the Board. The hospital was closed in march 1936
