Also in this portfolio is a drawing of Lee's apparatus for putting hot steam into the steam case of his engine, dated Oct. 1795.

Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 316. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 16.

For the Salford Twist Co. Cotton mill, Salford. The firm later became Philips Wood & Lee, and then Philips & Lee. George Lee originally ordered a 20 horse power engine for the firm, but changed the order to a 30 horse in Dec. 1798. This engine was erected alongside the firm's first 30 horse engine [see Portfolio 5/63] and connected to it. It was at work by Aug. 1799. Lee offered to experiment with automatic expansion gear designed by Peter Ewart on this engine, but according to Dickinson & Jenkins the trial was not carried out [pp.188-9]. In 1803 the two 30 horse engines were altered and combined with a new 48 inch cylinder to form the "Alteration Engine", which appears to have been called "Pluto" by the firm. The leftover 30 horse cylinder from this engine was sold to John Pooley [see Portfolio 5/158].

[Note that Dickinson & Jenkins fail to distinguish between this engine and the 100 horse engine below. The "Salford Twist engine's" eccentric gear and beam referred to on p. 172, 189 and 203 actually refer to the 100 horse power engine, not this engine as Dickinson & Jenkins imply.]
