When these plans were received they already had original plan numbers, but there were four series, each starting from number one. In order to use the original numbers the plans were given a stroke number first; thus:
RDBP 1/1 - 1520 covers the period 1905 - 1930
RDBP 2/1 - 1236 covers the period 1931 - mid July 1938
RDBP 3/1 - 1100 covers the period mid July 1938 - May 1948
RDBP 4/1 - 179 covers the period May 1948 - Jan 1949
Those plans later than 1948 are still kept by Bedford Rural District Council
A fifth series, RDBP 5/3 - 16, covers those plans which were neither marked with reference numbers nor the dates
RDBP 5/1 and 2 are reference books kept by the Council toplans now catalogued as RDBP 2/ and RDBP 3/. They are arranged in alphabetical order of applicant but are incomplete
