Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume L8 is the last in the series of the 8 'L' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of the Diocese of Exeter, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. However, there were two types of transfer, resulting in some of the Exeter preferments being transferred by commutation to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, while others were vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners.; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed Land Agents Messrs. Cluttons. The preferments in this volume concern the Exeter Bishoprick Estates, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners as follows: Manor of Burneyre on 14 August 1849 (published in the London Gazette) by Order in Council; part of the Manor of Lanwhitton published in the London Gazette on 18 December 1857 by Order in Council; and 18 September 1869 by vacancy. Also the Exeter Deanery Estates, which were vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 12 May 1848 by Order in Council and on 17 January 1861 by vacancy.; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as it was the most comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent and condition of the preferments that had been transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports.; The volume also has added annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporates later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Devonshire, parishes of Bishops Nympton, St. Mary Major (Exeter), St. Stephen (Exeter), Yarcombe, and Bishops Tawton; and the county of Cornwall, parishes of Newlyn, St. Allen, St. Erme and Cranlock.
