Collection of the Revd Walter Budgen [SAS-B]

Budgen was the Sussex Archaeological Society's first Honorary Curator of Deeds, from 1936 to 1952, having already performed the role without title since 1926 (for an obituary, see Sussex Notes and Queries, 13 (1952), 226-8). He calendared large numbers of documents received from solicitors and private individuals. The documents in this collection he presumably acquired in a private capacity, by gift and purchase. With the exception of SAS-BA/482-524 which he bought at an auction of Phillipps manuscripts, the earlier provenances of documents are not known

SAS-B, BA and BB were transferred to East Sussex Record Office (ESRO) in 1982 and those documents which relate to other counties were passed to the relevant record office, in most instances West Sussex Record Office (WSRO). With a small exception, this collection comprises documents gathered by the Reverend Walter Budgen (1862-1952). He calendared and deposited SAS-B with the Sussex Archaeological Society between 1928 and 1933, and SAS-BA and SAS-BB at dates not known. The exceptions, SAS-B/902-940, were given by the executors of Miss Laura Gordon Philcox on 11 May 1954, through Mr F Bentham Stevens.
