Microfilm of an interesting ts account (227pp, written c 1968) of his service in the ranks and then as a junior officer in the British Army in the UK and on the Western Front, October 1914 - 1918, and as a member of the Indian Civil Service, 1919 - 1937, including: his background, 1892 - 1914; enlisting in the 14th London Regiment, the Reserve Battalion of the London Scottish, and training in the Home Counties, October 1914 - March 1915; commissioned into the Suffolk Regiment, March 1915; service with the 3rd Battalion at Felixstowe, March 1915 - summer 1915; active service with the 2nd Battalion (3rd Division) in the Ypres Salient, summer 1915 - September 1915, returning to the UK suffering from shell shock until March 1916 when he was posted to the 7th Battalion in the Loos sector but was immediately accidentally wounded; serving as an Instructor in an Officer Cadet battalion in the UK until June 1917; active service with the 2nd Battalion in a quiet sector near Pronville, June 1917 - September 1917; joining and training with the newly formed Tank Corps at Wareham, September 1917 - May 1918; active service as Reconnaissance Officer with the 14th Tank Battalion and Intelligence Officer of the 2nd Tank Brigade in France and Belgium, May 1918 - ?November 1918; his service with the Indian Civil Service, 1919 - 1937, notably as District Commissioner at Henzada in Upper Burma during the Burma Rebellion, winter 1930 - 1931; commenting on the amateurish way in which Britain went to war; the grave shortcomings in man-management and army welfare; Army customs and looting; the Army's treatment of horses; the average officer's dislike of paper work; co-operation with Americans troops in 1918; the Indian Civil Service; the lack of contact between the British and Indian Armies; the Indian Military Police; the ineffectiveness of regular troops in flushing out the Burmese rebels; and mentioning Lieutenant Colonels C A'C Repington and G McL Sceales, Major Generals F E Hotblack and Sir Francis de Guingand, Lieutenant General Sir Aylmer Hunter-Weston, and Field Marshal Earl Wavell.
