Administrative / biographical background

A Rural Sanitary Authority was probably formed for East Preston Union in 1872, under the Public Health Act of that year, although no early records survive. In January 1895 it became the East Preston Rural District Council, under the Local Government Act of 1894.

The R.D.C. was abolished in March 1933 under the West Sussex Review Order and its area divided between two other councils: Chichester R.D.C. [Climping, Ford, Tortington], and Worthing R.D.C. [the remainder]. Parts of Rustington and Climping were also transferred to Littlehampton U.D.C.

Between 1872 and 1933 there were many changes in parish and district boundaries, and the major alterations are tabulated below. Full details of all changes may be found in Boundary Changes in West Sussex, (W.S.R.O. MP 1348).
