The school was opened in 1898 as a Board School for Boys, Girls, and Infants. In 1946 the George Street buildings became Copnor Secondary Modern Girls School, whilst the New Road buildings remained as a Junior Mixed and Infants School, becoming Northgate Middle School in 1975.
