400. Robert Hamilton, Stoke-on-Trent (R). May, Sep.-Dec. 1807, Jan. 1808, Feb. 1809, Dec. 1817. 17 items.
32 horse power double-acting crank engine, with 29 inch cylinder, 6 foot stroke, parallel motion, cast iron beam, cast iron connecting rod.

Reverse sections and plan of boiler house, boilers and seating; reverse plan and sections of the engine and boiler houses and boilers (the longitudinal section has a governor and throttle valve added in); sketches and notes about various components stuck together - valves, eduction socket etc., including notes from George Grieve and Samuel Hurt to William Creighton; sheet of drawings of various components including valves, brasses, air pump bucket and rod etc., marked "with A. Ward's letter 28 Dec. 1817." The reverse drawings bear letter codes.
Also various drawings of the mill etc.: sketch plan showing river, water wheel etc. with engine pencilled in and notes and calculations for the engine on the back, and press copy of map showing mill, course of the river Trent, Grand Trunk Navigation etc., dated May 1807; plan showing water wheel, pans, stampers etc. dated Sep. 1807; reverse plan and elevation of the engine and boiler houses and mill, showing apparatus, water wheel etc.; "Memorandums respecting Mr. Hamilton's 32 horse engine, 10 Oct. 1807", in John Southern's hand; letter from Robert Hamilton to John Southern dated Stoke, 24 Oct. 1807, about malt, and enclosing drawings of the engine house roof; rough sketch elevation of the engine house and mill; sketch plan of engine house, with shaft and fly wheel pencilled in; press copy sketch sections of the engine house with alternative roof designs; pencil cross-section of grinding pan.

For Robert Hamilton. Flint mill, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent. Hamilton bought the mill from Thomas Whieldon.
