17th Jan. 1851. The Mayor of York to the Mayor of Chester, acknowledging a copy of the resolutions of Chester Council which will be laid before his Town Council.
28th Jan. 1851. Letter from John Taylor from Hough Green, to Mr. Roberts (Corporate Estate Committee). Because of damage to his garden by fowl, he must give it up unless he can have it for 30/- p.a.
17th Feb. 1851. Proof of advertisement giving notice of a Monthly meeting to be held at the Exchange on 14th March for Rating.
1st March 1851. F.A. Frost from Egerton Street, to Finchett Maddock. As he is engaged that morning at Boughton Polling Booth, he cannot attend Council.
1st-5th March 1851. Sheet (torn from book) giving lists for daily duties of police (?).
10th March 1851. Printed notice of Council meetings on Friday next, to levy Rates and to consider the lowering of market charges.
n.d. Notice of motion by E.V.Parry - that in consequence of complaints by all parties frequenting the Fairs and Markets relative to the charges now taken at the New Cattle Market - to move that the price be lowered from 4d to 3d, per head, for all kinds of cattle, bulls excepted.
20th March 1851. John Philpot from 20 Montague Street, to J. Finchett Maddock. He has taken out a summons in Hill's Action and sends a copy of Charles Hall's opinion that John Jackson is entitled to the fund in question in Haly v. Bannister. If the Corporation do not succeed on the application, they will have to pay costs.
21st March 1851. Earl Grosvenor from 33 Eaton Place. As he cannot discover the bill mentioned despite several enquiries at the Private Bill Office, he asks for the exact title if his correspondent knows it. (Boughton Heath Enclosure
21st March 1851. Wm. Conway Jones from Customs, Flint, to Edward Roberts, Esq., giving a list of ships trading to Greenfield without ever paying anchorages.
[April 1851] Memorial to the Mayor from ten persons (named) being a committee appointed by a public meeting for the purpose of promoting the improvement of the Port and Harbour, asking him to call a public meeting to receive a report on the present state of the Dee question and to consider measures. 30th April 1851. Order, added, for a public meeting to be held on Friday next: John Williams, Mayor.
5th May 1851. D.Hughes from Walford Manor, to 'Edwards'. He has not heard from Mr. Paul and as he is going to London in the course of the week he must have the matter settled. He accuses him of being 'a shuffling man' and suggests that, if he wishes the money to remain longer, he should provide satisfactory security for it and a respectable man as bond for him.
7th May.1851. D.Hughes from Walford Manor, to Mr. Paul, stating that not wishing to put his brother to further expence, he is willing to renew the notes at 5% interest.
7th May 1851. Letter from Hugh Jones from Bridge Street, to the Mayor and Council, desiring provision of a suitable powder magazine.
11th May 1851. James Pownall from Crane Street, to the Chairman of Improvement Committee, complaining of the delay in paving that street.
28th May 1851. William Macdonald from the Candle Factory, Northgate Street, to the Chairman of Corporate Estate Committee, desiring to purchase the warehouse now occupied by him, and formerly by Mr. Jas. Maddock, as a candle factory, he wishes to know if the Corporation will renew the existing ground lease (3 lives & 21 years).
3rd June 1851. John Ward from 21 Watergate Street, (to the Magistrates?), enclosing two pounds and asking that the remainder of his fine may stand over for a short time. He hopes the Bench will take a more lenient view of the case.
16th June 1851. William Cole, Town Clerk of Ruthin, to J.F.Maddock, asking his opinion on whether the Corporation can accept the resignation of the Mayor on account of illness and proceed to elect another.

2nd July 1851. Letter from Coverdale Lee & Purvis, from 4 Bedford Row, to J.F.Maddock, concerning the suit in Chancery, Bosvile v. Gee, and asking for verification of burial of Charles Henry Brandt, son of Rev. F. Brandt of Aldford Rectory near Chester, died in March 1850. Form of affidavit required.
3rd July 1851. Circular letter from the Office of Inland Revenue to the Clerks to Commissioners, concerning a return of Game Certificates for the year 1850.
7th July 1851. Letter from Husband & Royle, from Newgate Street, to the Town Clerk, applying for a conveyance on behalf of Mr. Enoch Gerrard.
7th July 1851. Mr. J.Williams' notice of motion for 11th July: that more efficient measures be taken for the inspection of Butchers' meat to be offered for sale in the City.
9th July 1851. Jos. Newton for J. Allcock from L'pool, to Mr. James Paul, concerning money paid to Miss Maddock's account.
14th July 1851. Charles Townshend to Jno Finchett Maddock, stating that the Dean and Chapter have no intention of extending the drain in Abbey St. any further as they consider they have provided drainage in that locality for all parties entitled to it.

27th July 1851. Letter from James Pownall from Crane Street to the Chairman of Improvement Committee, calling attention to the state of the pavement below the Watergate and in Crane Street, which have never been properly repaired since the sewerage was made.

28th July 1851. J. Lewis from Wrexham, to J. Finchett Maddock. Mr. Robert Parry has sent him the application relative to the Mayersold to Mr. Palin. It appears that he sold the mare for his sister Mrs. Davies of Southey, and it is asserted that they never knew her to be lame or unsound. He hopes that the matter can stand over until Mr. Palin's return from Harrowgate, where he has been for his health.
2nd Aug. 1851. Notice of motion from Edwin V. Parry to J.F.Maddock: that the correspondence between the Watch Committee and the Gas Co. relative to lighting the City since the passing of the Municipal Reform Act be printed, a copy to be sent to each Member of the Council and 1000 copies publicly distributed.

6th Sept. 1851. Letter from Edwd. Bennett from Redstone near Ludlow (to Town Clerk?) referring to correspondence and an offer he made last year relative to the purchase of waste land at Saltney adjoining his farm. He still wishes to purchase and offers £70 an acre, and asks for his proposition to be laid before Corporate Estate Committee.
17th Sept. 1851. Samuel Teed for Theodore Martin from Chamber 10 New Palace Yard, Westminster, to J. Finchett Maddock, acknowledging a letter of credit in payment of accounts due from Chester Corporation re River Dee Company, opposition to Dee Standard Restoration Bill, Bala Pool Bill
29th Sept. 1851. Letter from William Phillips from Nicholas Street, to Improvement Committee, calling attention to the bad state of Weaver Street. He suggests taking away the west side and lowering the street from Commonhall Street to White Friars. He has spent a considerable sum improving property in the street. His tenants complain of the darkness of the street, which has only one lamp.
9th Oct. 1851. Humberston & Helps to J.F. Maddock, asking him to direct his agent to call at the Treasury and ascertain the cause of the deed (Sir P. Egerton & the Corporation) being so long detained.
9th Oct. Letter from Herbert P. Voules, Inspector of Prisons from 23 Inverness Road, London, to the Visiting Magistrates, City Gaol, Chester, annexing a copy of a statement made to him on Saturday last by Prisoner James Hawkeridge.
15th Oct. 1851. City Gaol: Hawkridge's statement alleging that Ducker, the Turnkey, rewarded prisoners for services done for him: Ducker's reply to the allegations.
n.d. Draft minutes (of meeting of Magistrates) giving the finding that nothing in Hawkridge's statement was proved which implicated Ducker or shewed misappropriation of the stores and provisions of the Prison.
27th Oct. 1851. Copy letter from Finchett Maddock to the Secretary of State, stating that the number of Municipal Electors on the Burgess list last made is 1969.
14th Nov. 1851. N.R. Reynolds from the Treasury, to the Town Clerk, Chester, returning the draft conveyance, Corporation of Chester to Sir.P.Egerton, for ingrossment.
14th Nov. 1851. Letter from Robert Ankers from Wrexham to Jno. Roberts, Chester, stating that Mrs. Phillips will not be able to pay any more rent as when her affairs are properly wound up they will be much worse than anticipated.
(Nov. 1851) Draft of summons to a Special meeting of the Council to be held on Friday next to receive the Treasurer's report of the result of his investigation to trace the property scheduled in the Answer to the Interrogatories in St. John's Hospital Suit.

Mr. Temple's letter, from The Lache, calling attention to the state of Lache Lane, which comes within the definition in the 51st section of the Act under which the streets and roads of Chester are regulated. Since the Act he has had to contribute to the City's Rates and so demands that the road be attended to.
