The same to the same, 18 September 1567, about his purchase from the Earl of land at Harthill and Woodhall [co. York], and about six red deer pasties sent to him. A postscript contains a statement of account between them. 1p. Endorsed.

The same to the same, 18 December 1568, referring to the lack of news from abroad owing to contrary winds; sale of lead and raising money. Asks for the bailiwick of Rotherham, [co. York], for Henry Lylle. 2pp. Seal. Endorsed.

The same to the same, from London, 20 September 1585, accompanying 10 lbs. of nutmeg at 5s. a pound and another 10 lbs. at 2s.6d. of the kind 'we sell ... unto the grosers which take towe or thre houndereth ponds wourthe at a tyme.' Discusses the purchase of cattle, and the method of paying for them. A postscript announces the arrival of a ship from Turkey with carpets etc., and asks if the Earl wishes to buy any. 1p. Endorsed.

Robert Swyfte to [the Earl of Shrewsbury], from London, 5 May 1548, relating to negotiations on the part of the Earl for the purchase of chantry lands, [Probably in Nottinghamshire. C.f. Edmund Lodge, Illustrations of British History, 1791, 2nd edition, 1838, unpublished papers, 151 (125).] and to a report that the Protector had appointed the Earl Justice of the Forests beyond Trent. ½p. Two writs, dated 12 May and 19 May 1551, to the Sheriff of Yorkshire, ordering him to distrain on the lands and chattels (a) of the Commissioners of the North Riding of Yorkshire, and (b) of the Commissioners of the East Riding, appointed to assess the second payment of a relief granted by Parliament, in order to enforce their presence in the Exchequer to make their returns. 2pp. Copies.

[George, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury], to Serjeant [Thomas] Walmesley and [Richard] Shuttylworth, engaging them to be present on behalf of the writer at the hearing of a case between the Crown, Lord Morley, and Mr. Harrington concerning the lands of Lord Monteagle by a special commission. This is followed by a list of instructions (f.55v), and by a pedigree of Harrington (f.56). [Lord Monteagle died 10 Nov. 1581, and his daughter and heir was the wife of Lord Morley. His grandfather, Edward, 1st Lord Monteagle, married Anne daughter of Sir John Harington, of Hornby Castle, Lancs.] 3pp. Endorsed. 'This letter went not.'

Thomas Genkyns to the Earl of Shrewsbury, at Coventry, from York, 25 December 1569, stating that the whole year's rent for the manor of Kimberworth, [co. York], amounting to £57 10 10, was due to the Crown. Owing to 'this troublesom tyme', the Queen's auditor did not attend at Doncaster, but the writer intends to be there in January to receive the revenue. ½p. Seal. Endorsed.

Calendar of Letters and Papers Foreign and Domestic, 1542, no. 331, and Archaeologia, vol.xxxiii, 5-6.] the younger, to [the Earl of Shrewsbury], from London, Ascension Day [1542], describing how the dowager Countess of Northumberland [Sister of the Earl, and widow of Henry Percy, 5th Earl of Northumberland.] presented a petition for maintenance from her husband's estate to the King at Greenwich. Refers to a dispute with Mrs. Wortley and to lands of Lord Braye. [Lord Braye married Anne, daughter of Francis, Earl of Shrewsbury.] 2pp. Address: My Lorde.

Thomas Jakes to the same, from London, 3 November [1501], describing an interview with Mr. Haye [? of the Exchequer], who promised that the Sheriffs of Nottingham and Derby should not be appointed without the Earl's approval. Appointment of [Thomas] Woode [Wood was appointed Chief Justice of Common Pleas on 28 October 1501 and was knighted on 14 November following.] as Chief Justice of Common Pleas, and other legal news. 1p. Mon.], 22 July [1511], on behalf of a young kinsman named Robert ap Hoell, who had been summoned before the Earl, and was apparently the defendant in a lawsuit brought by one of the Earl's servants. C[ ], gent., to [ ] Tempyll, servant to the Earl of Shrewsbury, from Westminster, 24 November [1517], mentioning the King's plans for spending Christmas at Woodstock, [co. Oxon.] or Abingdon, [co. Berk.] owing to the plague in London, and the general pardon issued that year by the Pope. 1p. Endorsed.

Robert Swyfte, the younger, to [the Earl of Shrewsbury], from London, 4 July [1531], stating that he had received the Earl's letters; paid £100 to the Master of the Savoy; given the images sent by the Earl into the keeping of Roland Shakerley and his wife; arranged for Shakerley to have ready the goods asked for in six days time, and for the daughter-in-law of Lady Greye to travel with Shakerley. Mentions the Earl's Privy Seals, and arrangements with Garter King-of-Arms for escutcheons for the roof of the Earl's chapel. Derby], no date, stating that he had reported the Earl's wishes to the Lord President of the Council [of the North], and that the President had asked whether the Earl was Steward of Doncaster, and wished him to attend the Council. [Calendar of Letters and Papers Foreign and Domestic, 1538, vol.xiii, pt.i, no.1471(6). Here stated to be addressed to the 4th Earl of Shrewsbury, but the true date would appear to be after the Earl's marriage in 1568.] 2 1p. Endorsed.

Robert Swyfte to the Earl of Shrewsbury, from London, 25 [June c.1538-45][Calendar of Letters and Papers Foreign and Domestic, 1538, vol.xiii, pt.i, no. 1471(1).], relating to the Earl's Privy Seals delivered to Mr. [Thomas] Wrothesleye[Subsequently Earl of Southampton and Lord Chancellor.] at Hampton Court; to a gentlewoman of the late Lady Mautravers,.[Catharine Grey, wife of Henry Fitz Alan, Lord Mautravers, later Earl of Arundel, died 1 May 1532.] whom Roland Shakerley and his wife were seeking to obtain for the Earl's household; to apparel left to Mistress Grace[Grace, daughter of Robert Shakerley, of Little Longstone, Derbyshire, married Francis Carless and subsequently Francis, Earl of Shrewsbury, before August 1553.] by her brother Hugh Shakerley. Asks for particulars of the clothes wanted by the Earl and Mistress Grace; the Master of the Savoy hoped to have heard from him before Midsummer. He has paid the Earl's money to Sir Brian Tuke. York, and enclosing a schedule of those summoned to send their 'demy lances' to Pontefract, [co. York] to muster before the Earl on 4 June. There will be over 300 light horsemen in co. Linc.], with Flemish fishing boats taken as prizes. They ask if it is lawful to buy these. 1p. Endorsed.

[The Earl of Shrewsbury] to the Earl of Northumberland, [10 September 1558], stating that he would be willing to send Lord Latimer's daughter to the Countess of Northumberland, [Lady Latimer and the Countess of Northumberland were sisters, daughters of Henry Somerset, 2nd Earl of Worcester. Catherine Latimer married Henry Percy, brother and heir of Northumberland.] but that the Queen had written for her to be sent to her mother in London, and therefore Northumberland must act speedily if he wishes her to be sent to him. 1p.
