Description

Pumping and Canal Engines. (12 items).

Single-acting engine, with 32 inch cylinder, 8 foot stroke, chain connection.

Reverse general view of the engine, plan of the engine and boiler, section of the engine and boiler; reverse sections of the engine house; chain links, adjusting screws, gudgeon and plummer block, piston rod cap - reverse drawings; clack and bucket, beam strap ends; catch pins, martingales, pipes, arch plates for beam ends etc. - reverse drawings; working gear - reverse front and side views; catches - full size reverse drawings; working gear - later partially coloured reverse front and side views.
Also plan and sections of the boiler and seating, 2 Jul. 1813; memorandum about alteration of the pumps following visit by James Watt Jr., William Murdock and John Southern on 1 Jul. 1813. All the drawings except the last item bear letter codes.

Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 116. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 134.

For the Birmingham Canal Co. Broadwaters, near Wednesbury. This engine was used to pump water from disused mine workings.
