Description

A collection of 99 black-and-white prints, mainly snapshots, relating to the career in India of Philip Docton Martyn (1904-1989), Indian Civil Service (Bengal) 1927-47, and his wife Margaret Lisle Martyn, née Gadd (c. 1913-2005). Subjects include views of Calcutta (St Paul's Cathedral, Government House, Victoria Memorial, General Post Office, Howrah Bridge, La Martinière, Shitalanatha Jain Temple, house at 2 Kyd Street, etc.), the Empress Bridge 1929, a series showing a Lama dance at Ghumli during an official visit, views of the Darjeeling area, scenes at Kalimpong and Gangtok, apparently taken during a trek in the area, Martyn inspecting ARP personnel at Howrah (1944-45).
